Mauricio Pochettino's appointment as the new head coach of the United States men's national team has not yet been officially confirmed, but reports from The Athletic suggest that the former Premier League and Ligue 1 manager will join the team in some capacity in September. Pochettino is anticipated to be present for the friendly against Canada on September 7 in Kansas City, though he may not be involved in a decision-making role from the sidelines initially.
In the interim, Mikey Vargas has been named as the interim head coach. Vargas, who previously managed the United States U-20 team, will lead the squad until Pochettino is fully integrated. The delay in formalizing Pochettino’s role is attributed to the resolution of his severance package with Chelsea, where he parted ways by mutual consent in May.
Pochettino, an Argentine native, has had a notable coaching career with stints at Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton, Paris Saint-Germain, and Espanyol. He led Tottenham to a Premier League runner-up finish in 2016-17 and a Champions League final in 2018-19, and secured a Ligue 1 title with PSG in the 2021-22 season. The U.S. Soccer Federation dismissed former head coach Gregg Berhalter in July following the team's early exit from the 2024 Copa America.
