Mauricio Pochettino: Chelsea in discussions to hire an ex-Tottenham manager as their new manager

Mauricio Pochettino, the former manager of Tottenham, is being courted by Chelsea in preparation to become their new manager.

The Argentine, whose most recent position was with Paris St. Germain, is interested in the position, but additional conversations must be held before an agreement is reached.

Chelsea, who are searching for a long-term replacement for Graham Potter, want the search to be done quickly.

Pochettino, 51, would take over for Frank Lampard, who was serving as interim manager at the time.

After the Blues fired Potter at the beginning of April, the former England midfielder was appointed manager, although he has lost all four of his matches.

It is unknown if Pochettino, who has been jobless since PSG sacked him in July 2022, would take over immediately or if Lampard would continue to work as usual until the end of the season.

The Argentine turned down a first approach from Chelsea, but the club is now happy to give him greater authority as he hunts for work that will allow him to make an influence beyond choosing the starting lineup.

Julian Naglesmann, the former manager of Bayern Munich, spoke with Chelsea before withdrawing from consideration.

Among the contenders were Burnley manager Vincent Kompany, who has led the Turf Moor team to promotion to the Premier League this season, and former Spain and Barcelona manager Luis Enrique.

From 2014 to 2019, Pochettino oversaw Spurs for five years, guiding them to the 2019 Champions League final, where they fell to Liverpool.

They had a poor start to the next season, and when he was fired in November 2019, they were ranked 14th in the Premier League.

While Chelsea won both championships, Pochettino also led Spurs to the League Cup final in 2015 and the Premier League's runner-up spot in 2016–17.

He was also in charge of Tottenham during the notorious match against Chelsea in May 2016 in which his team received nine yellow cards while the visitors only received three.
