Rivers United FC caretaker coach, Evans Ogenyi, has lamented his team's clumsiness in prosecuting the rescheduled matches, a factor responsible for the team's poor run and loss of form.
Recall that the management of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) suspended the league to enable the Pride of Rivers to conclude their outstanding matches arising from their aborted campaign in the 2023/2024 CAF Confederation Cup fixtures.
Also, the Pride of Rivers axed their head coach, the longest-serving coach in the NPFL, Stanley Eguma, following the team's poor results just last week.
However, things continue to slide from Rivers United's grasp as they have lost two consecutive matches, leaving the team in 13th position on the NPFL table.
Sunshine Stars Football Club of Akure defeated Rivers United 1-0 on Sunday in a rescheduled Matchday 27 of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
The match, played at the Ondo State Sports Complex, Akure, saw Rivers United FC lose to the host in a hard-fought encounter.
With the win, Sunshine Stars have moved from 17th to 18th position on the log.
The game ended goalless in the first half, with the home team missing many scoring chances. A goal by midfielder Promise Awosanmi was ruled out for offside.
Ibrahim Yusuf gave the home team the lead in the 68th minute of the encounter.
Rivers United Head Coach, Evans Ogenyi, said his side lost the game due to fatigue, noting that his team’s fixtures had not been easy.
“It has not been easy, but we have been compelled to play five matches in 15 days; we have no choice but to play.
“Nevertheless, we are approaching every game with all sense of seriousness and determination; this one has come and gone,” he said.
Sunshine Stars Coach, Kennedy Boboye, however, commended his players for playing to his game plan.
“This game has come and gone; our focus now is on the next game, which is the Federation Cup. After that, we will be playing host to Bendel Insurance FC.
“Our focus is to win our home matches and see how we will get something outside. Our major problem is how to score goals, but we will continue working to improve in that area,” he said.
