The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) defending champions, Enyimba International FC, secured their 10th 'Abia Derby' victory against Abia Warriors on Sunday.
The People’s Elephant displayed a sterling performance, pleasing fans and the state's Commissioner for Sports. However, a brief lapse in concentration allowed the Umuahia side to score a late consolation goal during added time.
Midfielder Eze Happy Ekwutoziam gave the People’s Elephant the lead late in the first half, while Chidiebere Nnachi scored his first goal of the season, providing an insurance goal for the Aba Landlords midway through the second half. Yet, they allowed the visitors to secure a late consolation goal, ending the match 2-1.
Coach Finidi George expressed regret over missed chances, particularly in the first 25 minutes, emphasizing the significance of scoring goals.
The former Super Eagles winger condemned the team's loss of concentration in the last seven minutes, leading to the opponent's goal. He assured that such lapses won't reoccur.
“I wasn’t happy in the last seven minutes, it was as if we were inviting them to come score which they did. I have spoken to them and it won’t happen again.
“In the league, we need goals. Opportunities were there, and we didn’t capitalize.
“For Eze, the guy is fantastic. He can play many positions – Right Back, Centre, or even the left back. This is my 3rd season with him in Enyimba, and we'll keep encouraging him.
“Chidiebere Nnachi, a young lad with lots of energy, gained confidence from the goal. We'll keep encouraging him and utilizing his energy.
“Despite the mistakes in the dying minutes, we celebrate the victory and will address the errors in training.”
The match's highlight was the presentation of the Man of the Match Award to Eze Happy Ekwutoziam.
