Mason Mount, an England international and product of Chelsea's renowned academy, bid an emotional farewell to Chelsea fans on Tuesday, as he prepares for a move to Manchester United.
After spending 18 years at Chelsea, Mount is set to join United in a £55 million ($69 million) deal and is expected to sign a five-year contract.
In a heartfelt video message on Instagram, Mount acknowledged the speculation surrounding his future and expressed gratitude for the support he received throughout his time at Chelsea.
While he acknowledged that not everyone would be pleased with his decision, he emphasized that it was the right move for his career at this moment.
Having joined Chelsea at the age of six, Mount became a beloved figure among fans. He played a pivotal role in Chelsea's Champions League victory in 2021 and went on to make 195 appearances for the club, scoring 33 goals.
Mount's progression saw him receive accolades such as the academy player of the year in 2017 and the first-team player of the year in 2021 and 2022. Additionally, he solidified his place in the England national team during his tenure at Chelsea.
The next chapter of Mount's career will commence at Manchester United, where manager Erik ten Hag made him a priority signing ahead of the club's return to the Champions League next season.
Mount's contract with United includes the option for a further 12-month extension. As part of the transfer agreement, United will also pay an additional £5 million ($6.3 million) to Chelsea based on Mount meeting certain performance targets.
