Mason Greenwood makes triumphant return to Football with Getafe amid controversy
Posted : 17 September 2023
Mason Greenwood made his long-awaited return to senior football after a 20-month absence, coming on as a second-half substitute in Getafe's 3-2 victory against Osasuna. The Manchester United forward had been sidelined since January 2022 due to legal issues related to online material. However, on February 2, 2023, all charges against the 21-year-old, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped.
Following a six-month internal investigation at Manchester United, both the club and Greenwood agreed that it would be best for him to rebuild his career "away from Old Trafford." His loan move to Getafe marked the beginning of this new chapter.
Greenwood's entrance onto the field was met with enthusiastic cheers from Getafe's supporters, although a small group of Osasuna fans in one corner of the stadium had a different reaction. Notably, a blocked shot by Greenwood led to the corner kick that ultimately resulted in Getafe's match-winning goal, propelling them into the top half of the league table.
Getafe's decision to sign Greenwood has faced criticism from a domestic abuse charity in Spain. However, the club has defended its choice, emphasizing that the England forward is no longer under criminal investigation.
