Mary Earps awarded England women's player of the year after stellar performances

Posted : 20 September 2023
Mary Earps, the talented goalkeeper, has been honored with the England Women's Player of the Year award in recognition of her outstanding performances over the past year. Her achievements include contributing significantly to the Lionesses' journey to the World Cup final, where she earned the prestigious Fifa Golden Glove award for her exceptional displays.

One of her standout moments came during April's historic women's Finalissima, where she played a pivotal role in England's victory over Brazil through a penalty shootout. In a fan vote, the 30-year-old was chosen as the Player of the Year, surpassing competitors Lucy Bronze and Alex Greenwood.

Mary Earps, who plays for Manchester United, is also a nominee for the Fifa Best Goalkeeper award, a title she previously claimed in 2022. Adding to her list of accomplishments, she was part of the European Championship-winning squad last year. Over the past 12 months, she earned 16 international caps, with seven of those appearances occurring during the World Cup, held in Australia and New Zealand.

Earps's remarkable performances included being named the Player of the Match in the Lionesses' penalty shootout victory against Nigeria in the Round of 16. She also demonstrated her penalty-saving prowess in the final, although her efforts were not enough to secure a victory, as Sarina Wiegman's team suffered a 1-0 defeat to Spain.

Having been capped 41 times in her career, Mary Earps has received a call-up to England's Nations League squad. The upcoming fixtures include a match against Scotland in Sunderland on Friday, followed by an away game against the Netherlands in Utrecht next Tuesday.
