Martinique and Panama face in thrilling double-header

Posted : 28 June 2023
The double-header will kick off with an exciting match between the two group leaders at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey. Martinique secured a 2-1 victory over El Salvador on Monday night, while Panama also won by the same scoreline against Costa Rica.

Martinique made a strong start, finding the net twice in the early stages of the game. Patrick Burner and Kevin Fortune scored within the first 20 minutes, with Burner registering his second goal in four Gold Cup matches and Fortune becoming the first Martinique player to score in three consecutive Gold Cups, adding to his four goals in eight games.

Despite being reduced to 10 men for a significant portion of the second half, Martinique displayed resilience and held off El Salvador's attacks.

Goalkeeper Yannis Clementia made a penalty save and came close to stopping a second penalty, but Bryan Tamacas' spot-kick found its way into the net in the 96th minute.

Panama opened the scoring with a fantastic goal in the first half by Jose Fajardo. Fajardo made a clever run into the box and headed home a well-delivered cross from Eric Davis, marking his first Gold Cup goal in five appearances.

Edgar Barcenas added to the lead with a header of his own, bringing his tally to two goals in 12 Gold Cup matches.

Similar to Martinique, Panama conceded a goal in stoppage time but managed to hold on for a 2-1 victory.

These two teams have faced each other frequently in recent years, with Panama largely having the upper hand. In the most recent Concacaf Nations League A tournament, Panama secured four points from their two encounters with Martinique.

They also defeated Martinique 2-0 in the group stage of the 2017 Gold Cup. Barcenas scored twice against Les Matinino in Panama's 5-0 victory in June 2022.

A victory for either side would likely secure their spot in the knockout round and propel them to first place with six points. A draw would leave both teams tied at the top of the group with four points.
