Marta, Brazil's leading scorer, announces final Women's World Cup tournament
Posted : 04 July 2023
Brazilian forward Marta expressed her disbelief and excitement as she prepares for her sixth Women's World Cup, confirming that the upcoming tournament in Australia and New Zealand will be her last.
The 37-year-old, who made her World Cup debut in 2003, holds the record as Brazil's all-time leading scorer with an impressive 117 goals. Despite winning the Copa America three times, she has yet to lift the coveted World Cup trophy.
Reflecting on her illustrious career, Marta shared her gratitude for the opportunity to represent her country for so many years. The chance to participate in another World Cup is a surreal experience for her. Brazil's best performance in the tournament was a runner-up finish to Germany in 2007.
As Marta continues to recover from a knee injury, Brazil's head coach, Pia Sundhage, suggested that she might start the tournament on the bench.
The football star had undergone surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament last year and made her return to the national team in February after an 11-month absence.
Although she didn't play in friendlies against England and Germany in April, she made a 74th-minute substitute appearance in their recent 4-0 victory against Chile.
Brazil's World Cup campaign will begin with a match against Panama on July 24, followed by games against France and Jamaica.
As Marta gears up for her final World Cup, fans and teammates alike will undoubtedly cherish the chance to witness the legendary player grace the pitch one last time on this global stage.
