Marseille continued their strong form by defeating struggling Le Havre 5-1 at the Velodrome on Sunday, narrowing the gap to Paris Saint-Germain at the top of Ligue 1 to just seven points. The victory also propelled them three points ahead of third-placed Monaco. Under Roberto De Zerbi, Marseille have been on a solid run, winning five of their last six matches across all competitions and scoring nine goals in their past two games.
The match saw a variety of scorers, with Valentin Rongier opening the scoring from long range in the 25th minute. Bilal Nadir then added a second with a low shot for his first senior goal in just his second Ligue 1 start. Neal Maupay, on loan from Everton, headed in the third before the halftime whistle, providing a commanding lead. In the second half, Nadir was replaced due to illness, but Marseille continued their dominance with a fourth goal from substitute Elye Wahi in the 66th minute.
The home side's fifth came from Ulisses Garcia, also coming off the bench, as Marseille scored five goals in a Ligue 1 match for the third time this season. Le Havre, who remain in the relegation zone, managed to pull one back late with a header from former Marseille player Andre Ayew. Despite this, the result was a resounding win for De Zerbi’s side, further cementing their place in the top half of the table.
Meanwhile, PSG's 4-2 win over Monaco in December kept them firmly in the lead, although they have a tough competitor in Marseille’s rise. Other notable results saw Brest, who have impressed in the Champions League, suffer a 2-0 loss to Angers, leaving them 12th in Ligue 1. Toulouse secured a surprise 1-0 win at Lens, and Strasbourg came from behind to beat Auxerre 3-1. Lyon, Nice, and Saint-Etienne also recorded victories over the weekend.
