Marseille Strengthen Second-Place Hold with 2-0 Win Over Angers

Posted : 10 February 2025

Marseille extended their grip on second place in Ligue 1 with a solid 2-0 victory over Angers on Sunday. The match at Stade Raymond Kopa saw Marseille dominate possession, but they had to wait until the 69th minute to open the scoring when Adrien Rabiot headed in Amine Gouiri's corner. Five minutes later, Neal Maupay sealed the win with a well-taken goal after a quick one-two with Gouiri, marking his fourth goal since joining from Everton.

Rabiot's growing contribution is notable, as the midfielder has scored three headers in the last five matches, enhancing his reputation as a goal-scoring threat. Gouiri made an immediate impact in his first start since joining from Rennes, while new loan signing Ismael Bennacer from AC Milan also impressed on his debut. Marseille's victory moved them six points clear of Nice and Monaco, maintaining their second-place position.

However, the gap to PSG, who remain unbeaten and dominant in Ligue 1, is still a significant 10 points, especially after PSG's 4-1 win over Monaco on Friday. The reigning champions are now focused on their Champions League knockout phase tie against Brest, where they are overwhelming favorites to advance.

Elsewhere, Lyon secured their first win under coach Paulo Fonseca with a commanding 4-0 victory over Reims, lifting them back into European contention. Nicolas Tagliafico, Corentin Tolisso, Rayan Cherki, and Georges Mikautadze were all on the scoresheet, while Reims, down to 10 men after Patrick Zabi’s red card, remain in 14th. Strasbourg also earned a 2-0 win over Montpellier, with Emanuel Emegha scoring his ninth league goal, while Toulouse drew 2-2 with Auxerre.
