Marseille announced on social media Thursday that they have signed striker Mason Greenwood from Manchester United, despite opposition from some of their fans. Greenwood, 22, who has made one appearance for England, was suspended by Manchester United in January 2022 following allegations of attempted rape and sexual assault. However, charges were dropped in February 2023, and he spent last season on loan with Getafe in LaLiga.
"Olympique de Marseille are delighted to announce the signing of Mason Greenwood from Manchester United. The 22-year-old striker has signed for the club following a successful medical," the French club stated on their website. Greenwood, who debuted for Manchester United at 17, made his Premier League debut shortly after and represented England in September 2020.
During his time at Manchester United, Greenwood made 129 appearances and scored 35 goals but had not played for the club since January 2022. "We wish Mason all the best in his future career," Manchester United posted on their website. Meanwhile, Marseille's left-wing mayor, Benoit Payan, expressed his disapproval, stating he did not want the club to be associated with shame.
Marseille did not reference the past allegations in their statement, instead praising Greenwood as "a precocious talent" and "an English nugget." The club revealed that Greenwood will wear the number 10 shirt but did not specify the contract length or transfer fee. Greenwood scored 10 goals in 36 games for Getafe last season and addressed the accusations upon joining the Spanish club, asserting his innocence while acknowledging mistakes in his relationship. His transfer to Marseille follows the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, last season's top scorer for the club.
