Marseille has officially appointed Gennaro Gattuso as their new head coach following the departure of Marcelino. The 45-year-old Italian manager has reportedly signed a contract until June 2024, with an option for an additional season.
Gattuso expressed his excitement, saying, "I'm looking forward to getting to work with my new team and taking on the upcoming challenges that await us," in a statement on the club's website.
Gattuso takes over from Marcelino, a Spaniard who left the club amidst strained relations with Marseille's fans. The team currently holds the eighth position in Ligue 1 and is scheduled to face Brighton in the Europa League on October 5th.
Gattuso acknowledged the passionate fan base of Marseille, describing the club and its stadium as celebrated throughout Europe for their passion and fervor.
His most recent managerial role was with Valencia, but he was relieved of his duties in January 2023, after only seven months in charge. Gattuso, a former Rangers and Italy midfielder, has been involved in management for a little over a decade, with previous coaching stints at Pisa, AC Milan, and Napoli.
As a player, Gattuso made 468 appearances for AC Milan from 1999 to 2012 and earned 73 caps while representing the Italian national team.
