Marquinhos apologizes after Brazil’s embarrassing 4-1 loss to Argentina

Posted : 26 March 2025

Brazil’s struggles continued with a disappointing 4-1 loss to Argentina in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match. The defeat means Brazil has not beaten Argentina in nearly six years, and the result further tarnishes their qualifying campaign. With 21 points from 14 games, Brazil sits fourth in the standings, with four rounds left. Argentina, the reigning world champions, had already secured their spot in the World Cup prior to the match.

The game started poorly for Brazil, as Argentina dominated despite missing key players like Lionel Messi and Lautaro Martinez. Julian Alvarez and Enzo Fernandez scored within the first 12 minutes, putting Argentina 2-0 ahead. Brazil briefly fought back after Matheus Cunha capitalized on a mistake by Cristian Romero, reducing the deficit to 2-1. However, Argentina quickly restored their two-goal lead, with Alexis Mac Allister scoring before halftime. Giuliano Simeone added a fourth for Argentina in the final 20 minutes.

This 4-1 loss marked Brazil's heaviest defeat in a World Cup qualifier, leaving them behind Argentina, Ecuador, and Uruguay in the standings. Brazil captain Marquinhos expressed his regret after the match, calling the performance "embarrassing." "What we did here today can’t happen again," he told Brazilian TV Globo. "We started very poorly, below our potential, and Argentina showed great confidence."

Marquinhos took responsibility, stating that both the players and the coach shared the blame. "It’s not just the coach’s fault... it’s the players’ fault too," he said. "We all have to do better. There’s no secret formula in football; we need to be humble and understand the moment."

Tensions between the players were apparent during the match, but Argentina’s superior play showed through. Despite having already secured their World Cup place when Uruguay and Bolivia drew earlier in the day, Argentina made a strong statement with their impressive win.

Alvarez, one of the goal scorers, praised the team’s performance. "We humbly did our job and played a great game. We gave them a show," he said. "It was a historic result, winning 4-1, and that makes us proud."

With the victory, Argentina solidified their position as the defending champions, and the performance further ramped up the excitement ahead of their World Cup defense. The team’s strong showing was a message to their rivals and their fans that they are ready for next summer's tournament.
