Maro Itoje extends Saracens stay with 'long-term' contract

Posted : 31 January 2024

England lock Maro Itoje has committed to a new "long-term" contract with Saracens, extending his association with the club where he made his debut in 2013. The 29-year-old, who has won three European Champions Cup titles and garnered acclaim as the European Player of the Year in 2016, has made 175 appearances for Saracens.

Itoje's decision to remain with Saracens comes after England captain Owen Farrell recently secured a move to Racing 92 in France. Itoje, a Saracens academy graduate, has 76 international caps and is part of England's squad for the upcoming Six Nations.

Having played a pivotal role in Saracens' successes, including four Premiership titles and three European Champions Cup victories, Itoje opted to stay with the club even during their relegation in 2020 due to salary cap breaches.

His commitment to Saracens was evident as he contributed to their Championship win and immediate return to the top flight. Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall praised Itoje's dedication, describing him as a "world-class player" and expressing confidence that the best of Itoje's contributions is yet to come.

Maro Itoje, commenting on his contract extension, emphasized his pride in Saracens as his home and expressed excitement about the squad's potential for exciting times ahead. The club, currently fourth in the Premiership, is set to face Bordeaux Begles in the last 16 of the Champions Cup. Itoje's new contract reflects his belief in the club's future and his commitment to contributing to its continued success on and off the field.
