The 2024 Maritime Cup has kicked off in Surulere, Lagos, with the defending champions, Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), defeating Micura Services 2-0.
No fewer than 12 teams from organizations in the maritime industry are participating in the competition.
The match saw both teams working hard to gain control of the game and penetrate each other's defenses.
NPA scored their first goal in the 12th minute when Okamilekan Eletu connected with a well-delivered corner kick and nodded it into the opponent’s net.
NPA was not complacent with the lead as they mounted sustained pressure on Micura in search of a second goal.
Micura rallied to get back in the game, creating many scoring chances but were unable to beat NPA’s in-form goalkeeper.
Micura's efforts were not enough, as Mustapha Nana netted NPA’s second goal in the 72nd minute to extend their lead.
NPA held on to their lead to record their first win and the much-needed three points in their group.
Dr. Bolaji Akinola, the creator of the Ships Ports Maritime Cup, noted that the competition, in its 15th edition, has continued to bring companies in maritime operations together.
He stated that it was a successful opening ceremony, with chief executive officers from the maritime industry present to witness yet another football event.
“We are happy to organize another football competition that brings both private and government agencies in the maritime industry together.
“This is the oldest industry competition, which has been in existence for the past 15 years.
“We recorded a huge turnout and, as expected, we are looking forward to another successful event that brings the top players in the industry together.”
