Maresca's Late Substitutions Nearly Cost Chelsea in Win Over Tottenham

Posted : 04 April 2025

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca admitted he nearly jeopardized his team's 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur after making defensive substitutions before realizing the game had 12 minutes of stoppage time. Maresca replaced attackers Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez with defenders Tosin Adarabioyo and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, aiming to strengthen his defense.

However, he later recognized that the long added time meant his changes might have been premature, though Chelsea held on to secure the win, which provided a boost to their top-four aspirations and Champions League hopes.

Maresca praised his team's ability to withstand the pressure, especially in the dying moments, and emphasized the importance of winning in challenging situations. Reflecting on the match, he noted that the return of striker Nicolas Jackson had provided the team with more structure, particularly through his pressing, which improved their overall performance.

Maresca's approach to "dirty" wins, especially in tough situations, highlighted his desire to develop a resilient and adaptable team.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, on the other hand, criticized his team's poor defending for Chelsea's goal and expressed frustration with VAR's decision to disallow what he thought was a legitimate equalizer from Pape Sarr due to a foul.

Postecoglou downplayed claims of frustration with Spurs fans, who had booed his substitutions, and clarified that his gesture after Sarr's disallowed goal was intended to encourage the supporters to celebrate a well-executed goal, despite the disappointment. With Spurs struggling in 14th place in the league, Postecoglou's focus remains on improving his team's performance.
