Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has emphasized that his team may need to adapt their tactical approach for Sunday’s crucial London derby against Arsenal. His possession-based style has drawn criticism, particularly after Chelsea’s unconvincing 1-0 victories over Leicester in the Premier League and Copenhagen in the UEFA Conference League.
Fans expressed frustration at the team’s slow build-up play, but Maresca acknowledged that the nature of the game against Arsenal might require more flexibility in their approach.
Maresca explained that while Chelsea aims to control possession, the opposition’s tactics could dictate adjustments. He pointed out that Arsenal’s high-pressing style might create space for Chelsea to attack more directly, rather than relying solely on ball retention.
He referenced how his team’s positioning against Copenhagen led to Pedro Neto making a late sprint, suggesting that a defensive setup would force his forwards to work harder, whereas playing higher up the pitch could ease their workload while creating attacking opportunities.
The Italian manager also confirmed that Robert Sanchez will start in goal for the Arsenal clash after reclaiming his spot against Leicester. Sanchez had been dropped following a string of costly mistakes, missing four consecutive league matches before returning to the lineup. Maresca believes the goalkeeper needed a mental reset and hopes he will remain Chelsea’s first-choice until the end of the season.
