Marcus Rashford, the 26-year-old forward from Manchester United, has been excluded from Gareth Southgate's provisional England squad for Euro 2024. Despite his previous contributions, Rashford's struggles with form this season, evidenced by seven goals and two assists in 33 league appearances, led to his omission. Having played in seven England games this season before being sidelined against Belgium in March, Rashford's absence from the training squad, which will consist of approximately 30 players, signals a notable decision by Southgate.
In addition to Rashford's absence, reports suggest that Jordan Henderson, the midfielder from Ajax, has also been overlooked, while Raheem Sterling of Chelsea has not made the cut. The official confirmation of the squad is scheduled for 14:00 BST on Tuesday, unveiling Southgate's selection process and notable exclusions.
Among the uncapped players making Southgate's initial selection are Jarrad Branthwaite, Curtis Jones, Jarell Quansah, and Adam Wharton. Branthwaite, a 21-year-old Everton centre-back, played a pivotal role in securing Premier League safety for his team this season. Liverpool centre-back Quansah, 21, and 23-year-old midfielder Jones contributed significantly to Liverpool's third-place finish in the top flight. Wharton, aged 20, impressed at Crystal Palace following his move from Blackburn Rovers, earning recognition alongside his teammates Eberechi Eze, Marc Guehi, and Dean Henderson in Southgate's squad.
The announcement also includes established players such as Chelsea's Levi Colwill, West Ham's Jarrod Bowen, Burnley's James Trafford, Manchester City's Jack Grealish, and Brentford's Ivan Toney. Additionally, Manchester United's Kobbie Mainoo and left-back Luke Shaw have made the cut, with Mainoo, aged 19, having featured in friendlies against Brazil and Belgium in March and making 31 appearances for Manchester United this season, scoring four goals. Shaw, however, has been absent from play since February due to a muscle injury.
