Marco Verratti departs PSG for Al Arabi in €45 million move to Qatar

Posted : 14 September 2023
Italy midfielder Marco Verratti has bid farewell to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) as he embarks on a new journey with Qatari club Al Arabi. This significant move was confirmed by both clubs on Wednesday.

Verratti, a key figure in the Italian national team, has inked a three-year contract with Al Arabi in the Qatar Stars League. The transfer fee, reportedly around €45 million ($48.31 million), is a testament to the 30-year-old's football prowess, according to Italian media.

Reflecting on his time at PSG, Verratti expressed his pride in wearing the Parisian club's colors for over a decade. He acknowledged the privilege of playing alongside great teammates and clinching an impressive 30 trophies during his tenure. Verratti's heartfelt message conveyed his lasting connection to Paris and its supporters.

The midfielder's journey began when he joined PSG in 2012, leaving his hometown club Pescara. At the time, PSG secured the then-19-year-old's services for €12 million ($12.87 million). Over 11 seasons with the Parisian side, Verratti made a remarkable 416 appearances, making him the second-highest appearance maker in the club's history, trailing only Jean-Marc Pilorget (435).

Verratti played a pivotal role in PSG's dominance in Ligue 1, contributing to nine league titles, a record in French football. He also played a part in securing the Coupe de France and the Coupe de la Ligue six times.

However, recent managerial changes at PSG and the departures of star players like Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Mauro Icardi meant that Verratti was not part of new manager Luis Enrique's plans.

The PSG president, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, acknowledged Verratti's lasting connection to the club, emphasizing his dedication and contributions over the years.

On the international stage, Verratti has earned 55 caps for Italy, scoring three goals. He was a vital part of the Italian squad that secured victory in Euro 2020, starting in the final match where they triumphed over England in a penalty shootout.

Al Arabi, runners-up in the previous season's Qatar Stars League, have commenced the new season with three draws. The Qatari transfer window remains open until September 18, leaving room for further developments in the transfer market.
