Marc-André ter Stegen Faces Long Recovery from Serious Knee Injury

Posted : 24 September 2024

Germany's head coach Julian Nagelsmann expressed his shock at the serious knee injury sustained by Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, who is set to undergo surgery and face a recovery period of at least eight months. Ter Stegen suffered a rupture of the patella tendon in his right knee during a recent LaLiga match against Villarreal, where he fell awkwardly after jumping for a ball, resulting in him being stretchered off the field.

The injury is particularly concerning given that the 32-year-old goalkeeper has previously undergone two operations on the same knee during the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons. Nagelsmann acknowledged the impact of losing Ter Stegen, noting that it adds to the challenges faced by the German national team after the recent retirement of experienced goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

In light of Ter Stegen's absence, Nagelsmann has selected two uncapped goalkeepers, Oliver Baumann from TSG Hoffenheim and Alexander Nubel from VfB Stuttgart, to support the squad during the upcoming Nations League matches against Hungary and the Netherlands. Additionally, Fulham's Bernd Leno, who has nine international caps, was called up earlier this year but has yet to make an appearance for the national team.

Germany currently leads their Nations League group with four points after two matches and will face Bosnia and the Netherlands in October. Nagelsmann expressed his support for Ter Stegen during his recovery, emphasizing that the team will be there for him both on and off the pitch as he navigates this difficult period.
