Manchester United's fall from glory: The decline of a once-dominant footballing giant
Posted : 17 September 2023
Manchester United, a club that once dominated the Premier League and European competitions, has found itself in a state of mediocrity in recent years. The last time they clinched the Premier League title was over a decade ago in the 2012/13 season.
Since then, their trophy cabinet has remained relatively empty, with the Europa League in 2016/17 being their most recent major title. This decline is stark for a club with a record 20 English league championships.
The glory days of Manchester United, led by Sir Alex Ferguson, are a distant memory. Under Ferguson's management, the club won numerous Premier League titles and even secured Champions League trophies. However, since his retirement, the club has struggled to maintain its dominance.
Ferguson was known for his ability to handle star players with big egos and maintain discipline within the squad. He also nurtured a generation of talented players from the club's youth academy, creating a strong core that led to success for many years.
Since Ferguson's departure, the club has gone through various managers with different approaches, including experienced ones like Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal, as well as former players like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. None have been able to replicate the success of the Ferguson era.
The club's reputation has also taken a hit, with reports of player disputes, wage complaints, and poor team morale becoming more common. Recent incidents, like Jason Sancho's criticism of the coach and subsequent exclusion from the squad, highlight the internal issues within the team.
Manchester United, once a feared opponent at Old Trafford, now faces humiliation in front of their home crowd. Teams that used to be cautious when visiting Old Trafford now celebrate victories, including Brighton's recent 3-1 win. This decline in reputation and performance is affecting the club's brand.
Despite their financial resources and budget, Manchester United's brand is in decline, and it appears that they may not be among the top contenders in domestic or European competitions this season.
