Manchester United defeated Arsenal 2-0 at MetLife Stadium as they begin their summer tour of the United States.
Bruno Fernandes, United's new permanent captain, showcased his leadership by scoring a goal in the first half, followed closely by another from Jadon Sancho, who was positioned as the No. 9 in Erik ten Hag's system.
The match saw Tom Heaton in goal, allowing new signing André Onana to continue building fitness after his move from Inter. Heaton made an impressive double save from Gabriel Martinelli.
Mason Mount started the game for United in front of a record-breaking crowd of 82,262 in New Jersey. Arsenal's manager, Mikel Arteta, fielded a strong team, including Declan Rice, Jurriën Timber, and Kai Havertz.
However, Arteta will be disappointed with the mistakes that led to both of United's first-half goals, with Aaron Ramsdale and Gabriel making crucial errors.
Amad Diallo suffered an injury, a downside for Ten Hag's team. The Ivory Coast winger came on as a substitute at halftime but had to be replaced shortly afterward with Facundo Pellistri. Despite the outcome, both managers agreed to have a penalty shootout after the final whistle, providing an opportunity to practice penalties in front of the large crowd.
United emerged victorious in the shootout, winning 5-3 with successful efforts from Casemiro, Diogo Dalot, Victor Lindelöf, Marcus Rashford, and Christian Eriksen. Fabio Vieira missed the decisive kick for Arsenal. Overall, it was a significant game for United, with Fernandes leading by example as captain and Sancho impressing in his role as a striker.
