Manchester United suffer 3-1 defeat to Brighton amid managerial frustration

Posted : 16 September 2023
Manchester United suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Brighton at Old Trafford, leading to frustration from the home crowd towards manager Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag, who had previously enjoyed strong support from United fans, faced backlash for substituting Rasmus Hojlund with Anthony Martial in the second half.

The decision was met with boos and discontent among the fans.

Despite the change, the outcome didn't significantly improve for United, who fell behind due to a first-half goal from former United player Danny Welbeck.

Pascal Gross and substitute Joao Pedro extended Brighton's lead in the second half, with both players finding too much space around United's penalty area.

Hannibal Mejbri's goal provided some hope for the hosts, but Brighton remained a threat throughout the match.

Andre Onana made four crucial saves, including one in injury time to deny Ansu Fati, preventing further damage for United. This loss marked United's first home defeat in 13 months, with Brighton securing their fourth successive Premier League win over the Red Devils.

Ten Hag's team has now conceded 10 goals in their last four games and has faced consecutive matches with more than one goal conceded in the league for the first time since 1979.

United's start to the season, with only six points from their first five games, is their worst since the 2014-15 campaign under Louis van Gaal.

The team is facing challenges with player absences, including Jadon Sancho, who is training separately due to a dispute with Ten Hag, and Antony, who is dealing with personal issues.

Despite the presence of experienced players, United struggled offensively, with Marcus Rashford being the exception. Rashford had a first-half effort deflected onto the post and crossbar, and he provided the low cross that Hojlund missed.

United's momentum waned as the game progressed, and they couldn't replicate their comeback from a two-goal deficit as they did against Nottingham Forest last month.
