Manchester United stages dramatic comeback to beat Aston Villa in WSL season opener

Posted : 01 October 2023
In an exhilarating start to the Women's Super League season, Manchester United overcame a deficit to defeat Aston Villa, who had Kirsty Hanson sent off with a red card in a thrilling match.

Scotland's Kirsty Hanson was shown a straight red card for a high tackle on midfielder Hayley Ladd in the second half at Villa Park. Despite this setback, the hosts took an unexpected lead shortly afterward when England's Rachel Daly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

However, Villa's jubilation was short-lived as Manchester United swiftly responded. Spain's Lucia Garcia seized on a loose ball in the box from a corner, equalizing the score at 1-1.

In a dramatic turn of events, United completed their comeback with a stoppage-time winner. Substitute Rachel Williams headed in Nikita Parris' cross, securing the victory in the WSL season opener.

Despite the loss, Aston Villa demonstrated their potential to challenge the usual top four teams in the WSL this season. Manchester United utilized their squad effectively to secure the win.

Throughout the match, Brazilian forward Geyse, United's summer signing from Barcelona, impressed with her pace and created problems for Villa's defense. The Netherlands goalkeeper, Daphne van Domselaar, made crucial saves, including one from Geyse, while Nikita Parris tested her with a powerful shot.

The match was a highly entertaining affair at Villa Park, attended by a record-breaking WSL crowd of 12,533 fans.
