Manchester United Set for Preseason Return of Sancho, Greenwood Amid Transfer Uncertainty

Posted : 28 June 2024

Manchester United anticipate Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood to return for preseason training if they haven't secured moves to new clubs by the start of the preseason, according to a source from ESPN. The club has instructed players not participating in the European Championship or Copa América to report back to Carrington on July 8.

Efforts are being made to find new clubs for Sancho and Greenwood. However, should they remain with United by the set date, they will be expected to resume training. Greenwood, who is attracting interest from Lazio, Juventus, Napoli, and Marseille, might train at Carrington for the first time since January 2022, following his suspension due to legal issues. The charges against him were dropped in February 2023, and he spent the last season on loan at Getafe.

Sancho's return to training is still under consideration, as per an ESPN source. The 24-year-old, who was loaned to Borussia Dortmund for the second half of last season, has not trained with Manchester United's first team since his fallout with manager Erik ten Hag in September. Attempts to transfer Sancho to Barcelona and Juventus have been hindered by his £40 million ($51 million) valuation.

Manchester United are keen on securing permanent departures for both players, though loan deals are still on the table. Meanwhile, the club is in the process of reshaping Erik ten Hag's coaching staff. Talks with Go Ahead Eagles manager Rene Hake, who has previously worked with Ten Hag at FC Twente, have progressed, and he is expected to join the backroom team.

Additionally, former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is set to be offered a coaching role, raising questions about the futures of current assistants Mitchell van der Gaag, Steve McClaren, and forwards coach Benni McCarthy, whose contract expires at the end of the month.
