Manchester United seeks Mason Greenwood's future pending rape and assault charges
Posted : 08 July 2023
Manchester United is reportedly aiming to reach a decision regarding Mason Greenwood's future before the start of the upcoming season. The young player has been absent from the club since January 2022 following his arrest on charges of attempted rape and assault.
Although the criminal charges were dropped in February, Greenwood remained suspended as the club conducted its own internal investigation. Sources suggest that this process is nearing its conclusion, and Greenwood will be informed of the outcome before Manchester United's season opener against Wolves on August 14th at Old Trafford.
Greenwood has not been present for the team's preseason training, but he has been training individually to maintain his fitness. His last appearance for Manchester United was in a 1-0 victory against West Ham United on January 22nd, 2022.
Regardless of whether Greenwood is allowed to rejoin the squad, manager Erik ten Hag is reportedly focused on signing a new striker during the summer transfer window. While Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen have been deemed too expensive, Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta and Randal Kolo Muani from Eintracht Frankfurt have emerged as preferred targets.
Manchester United is working within a limited budget this summer after spending £55 million ($70.37m) on another player, Mason Mount. The club is determined not to overpay for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana to ensure sufficient funds are available to secure a striker.
Talks with Inter Milan are ongoing, and sources indicate that United is hopeful of making progress in negotiations over the weekend. Onana has yet to agree on personal terms for the move to Old Trafford, but he has shown interest in joining the club.
