Manchester United seeks Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins due to high prices
Posted : 17 June 2023
Manchester United have turned their attention to Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins as they grow frustrated with the high price tags associated with Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen. Watkins, who has been performing consistently for Aston Villa since his arrival in 2020, impressed with 15 Premier League goals in 37 appearances last season, attracting the interest of Manchester United's scouts.
Initially, manager Erik ten Hag had hoped to secure the signature of Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur. However, Daniel Levy, chairman of Tottenham, is expected to demand a substantial transfer fee despite Kane's contract expiring next year. Manchester United faces a similar issue in their pursuit of other targets like Victor Osimhen from Napoli, Goncalo Ramos from Benfica, Randal Kolo Muani from Eintracht Frankfurt, and Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta.
While Watkins is under contract with Aston Villa until 2025, he is likely to be a more affordable option compared to other striker targets for Manchester United. The club is planning to make wise investments as they also need to reinforce their midfield and goalkeeper positions. Their ongoing pursuits include Chelsea's Mason Mount and Andre Onana from Ajax.
