Manchester United Secure 4-0 Win Over Everton as Chelsea and Tottenham Continue Strong Runs

Posted : 01 December 2024

Ruben Amorim celebrated his first Premier League victory as Manchester United boss with a dominant 4-0 win over Everton, as his team recovered from a slow start to dispatch the struggling Toffees. This victory marked a significant step forward for the Portuguese manager, who has now extended his unbeaten start at United to three matches.

Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag in November, had previously guided United to a 1-1 draw at Ipswich and a 3-2 win over Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League, but this was his most impressive result so far.

Marcus Rashford was pivotal in the win, scoring twice, including a deflected strike in the 34th minute that put United 2-0 up. His performance highlighted the team's growing offensive potency under Amorim. United’s third goal came shortly after halftime when Rashford completed a well-taken finish following a precise pass from Amad Diallo.

Amorim's decision to start Joshua Zirkzee instead of Rasmus Hojlund paid off, with the Dutch striker scoring his first Premier League goal for United in a match-winning performance that demonstrated the team’s emerging cohesion.

While the result was a morale booster for Amorim and his squad, the manager acknowledged that it wasn’t a perfect performance. He described the game as "a rollercoaster," with moments of brilliance mixed with periods of necessary struggle.

Despite the scoreline, Amorim emphasized the pragmatic nature of the victory, noting that there was still much work to do as United aim for a return to title contention. His realistic outlook on the challenges ahead at United, especially given their current position in ninth, highlights the long road to recovery for the team.

Elsewhere in the Premier League, Chelsea continued their impressive form, securing a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa. This win extended their unbeaten streak to six games in all competitions, putting them in a strong position to challenge for a Champions League spot.

Nicolas Jackson opened the scoring early with a volley from Marc Cucurella’s cross, followed by a second goal from Enzo Fernandez. Chelsea capped off their dominant display with a stunning long-range strike from Cole Palmer in the final minutes, leaving Villa struggling to find form after a poor run of results.

Tottenham’s bid for a top-four finish suffered a setback with a 1-1 draw against 10-man Fulham. Despite taking the lead through Brennan Johnson’s strike, Spurs couldn’t hold onto the advantage as Fulham’s Tom Cairney equalized with a well-placed shot.

Cairney was later sent off after a controversial VAR decision upgraded his yellow card to a red following a foul on Dejan Kulusevski. Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou expressed frustration with the ongoing criticism of his team’s inconsistency, pointing out the challenges of maintaining focus amidst negative press.

The weekend’s action also set the stage for a major clash later between Manchester City and Liverpool. With City struggling to keep up with the leaders, the match at Anfield promised to be crucial in determining whether City can revive their title hopes or if Liverpool will continue to cement their dominance at the top of the table. Fans were eagerly awaiting the blockbuster encounter, which would prove vital for both clubs as they strive to keep pace in the race for the Premier League crown.
