Manchester United's Struggles Continue with 2-0 Defeat to Newcastle

Manchester United's difficult 2024 ended with a fourth consecutive defeat as Newcastle triumphed 2-0 at Old Trafford, piling pressure on manager Ruben Amorim. The loss, which left United in 14th place, just seven points above the relegation zone, marked another setback for the Portuguese coach, who admitted this week that his job is at risk unless results improve.

 

Amorim's tenure at United has been challenging, with only two wins in his first nine league matches. The team struggled in the first half against Newcastle, conceding twice within the first 19 minutes. Alexander Isak gave the visitors the lead early on, and Joelinton added a second after 21 minutes. United’s defense, already weakened by the absence of captain Bruno Fernandes, failed to cope with Newcastle's midfield dominance.

Despite a couple of missed opportunities for Newcastle, including Isak's fluffed chance and a disallowed goal, United's performance remained underwhelming. Amorim made an early substitution, bringing on Kobbie Mainoo for Joshua Zirkzee in the 33rd minute, but the team continued to falter. The home side had a few chances to get back into the game, with Rasmus Hojlund and Casemiro both squandering clear opportunities before halftime.

 

The second half saw some improvement, with United creating more chances, including a header from Harry Maguire that hit the post. However, despite the introduction of Alejandro Garnacho, Newcastle regained control and managed to secure the win. The defeat marked United's third consecutive home league loss, a first since 1979, and with tough fixtures ahead against Liverpool and Arsenal, Amorim's future looks uncertain.
