In the latest UEFA report on football clubs' finances, Manchester United's squad for the last financial year has been declared the most expensive ever recorded.
Despite securing a third-place finish in the Premier League and clinching the Carabao Cup in Erik ten Hag's debut season, the squad's total cost reached €1.422 billion ($1.543bn).
Notable acquisitions contributing to this record-breaking figure include Antony (€95 million), Harry Maguire (€93m), Jadon Sancho (€85m), and Casemiro (€82m).
According to the UEFA's European Club Finance and Investment Landscape report, Manchester United's squad surpassed the 2020 Real Madrid squad, totaling €1,332m, making it the costliest assembled.
The report included financial data for most major European clubs, excluding Chelsea, Everton, and Leicester City, whose 2023 financial data wasn't released. Consequently, Chelsea's approximately €993m spending from the summer of 2022 to August 2023 was not factored into the assessment.
The analysis also highlighted the growing trend of "multi-club ownership," where over 300 clubs are part of ownership groups with multiple teams. This trend, predominantly fueled by American investors, raises concerns about potential integrity risks, with UEFA acknowledging the increased likelihood of clubs with the same owner or investor facing each other in competitions.
The report, encompassing the European football economy predicted to be around €26 billion in revenue for clubs in 2023, emphasized the need for vigilance regarding the potential challenges posed by multi-club ownership.
Published against the backdrop of the ongoing success of the Abu Dhabi-backed City Football Group network, the report noted that two teams within the group, Manchester City and Girona, are currently positioned favorably in their respective leagues, poised to qualify for the next season's Champions League.
