Manchester United relieves Harry Maguire of captaincy post-Young departure
Posted : 17 July 2023
Manchester United has decided to relieve Harry Maguire of his captaincy duties ahead of the 2023-24 season. When Maguire joined United in 2019 for a record-breaking fee, one of his key attributes was his leadership ability.
He quickly captained the team within three months of his arrival and was later appointed as the permanent captain after Ashley Young's departure.
However, Maguire's situation at the club has changed significantly. He is now considered as the fifth-choice central defender under the management of Erik ten Hag, behind players like Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof, and even Luke Shaw.
This shift in his position within the squad has led to the decision to strip him of the captaincy.
With the Euro 2024 approaching, England's national team manager Gareth Southgate has advised Maguire to play more regularly in order to secure his place in the national squad.
Despite sources close to Maguire stating his desire to stay at Manchester United, other clubs, including West Ham, have shown interest in signing him. This situation raises the question of whether it might be the right time for Maguire to consider a potential move to another club.
