Manchester United nears partnership with Sir Jim Ratcliffe amid ownership shift

Posted : 10 November 2023
Manchester United is on the verge of an alliance with Sir Jim Ratcliffe during the international break, anticipated to involve Ratcliffe's acquisition of a 25% stake in the club for approximately £1.25 billion, as per a source disclosed to reporters. The impending deal may afford Ratcliffe some sway over the footballing aspects of the business, with Sir Dave Brailsford, the director of sport at INEOS, expected to play a significant role.

Almost a year following the Glazer family's contemplation of selling the club, discussions unfolded with Ratcliffe and Qatari businessman Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani submitting bids for a complete takeover valued at approximately £5 billion. However, the Glazers opted against these offers, intending to retain their majority shareholding and, instead, are on the verge of securing an agreement with Ratcliffe.

Amid the unfolding negotiations, fans are organizing a pre-match demonstration against the Glazers' choice to persist as the club's proprietors before the upcoming Premier League clash against Luton Town at Old Trafford. Sources intimate that Ratcliffe aspires to expand his ownership stake over time, potentially aiming for majority ownership, although the specifics of this expansion remain indistinct, given the Glazers' enduring unpopularity since their highly leveraged buyout in 2005.

Once Ratcliffe becomes a shareholder in United, plans are in place for additional investments to enhance both Old Trafford and the club's Carrington training ground, as disclosed by sources. Importantly, assurances have been provided to INEOS creditors that Ratcliffe's involvement with the club will stem from his personal wealth rather than company funds, indicating a personal investment commitment by Ratcliffe himself.
