Manchester United may lose goalkeeper André Onana for a month, AFCON call

Posted : 04 September 2023
Manchester United could face the prospect of losing André Onana for an entire month early next year as the goalkeeper has confirmed his return to international duty with the Cameroon national team.

Onana, who joined Old Trafford from Inter this summer, had not played for Cameroon since leaving the squad during their World Cup campaign in Qatar. However, the 27-year-old has now accepted a call-up, potentially requiring United to release their first-choice goalkeeper for the Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to take place in Ivory Coast in January.

In a statement shared on social media, Onana expressed his unwavering commitment to representing his homeland, Cameroon, despite facing challenges and injustices. He emphasized his strong desire to contribute to the national team's success and meet the expectations of Cameroonians.

Cameroon is still working to secure their place in the tournament, which was postponed from 2023. They have a final qualifier against Burundi scheduled for September 12.

The Africa Cup of Nations is set to run from January 13 to February 11, potentially causing Onana to miss up to four Premier League matches.

Onana's absence from the Cameroon national team dates back to the World Cup, where he participated in the first game against Switzerland but left the squad before the second match against Serbia. He formally retired from international duty in December, citing a disagreement with head coach Rigobert Song.
