Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag announces goalkeeping changes, removing David de Gea
Posted : 19 July 2023
Manchester United's manager, Erik ten Hag, is making significant changes for the upcoming season, and one of the most notable moves is in the goalkeeping position. After 12 years as the first-choice goalkeeper, David de Gea has left the club, taking with him an impressive record of 545 club appearances, 190 clean sheets, and the 2022-23 golden glove award.
Stepping into the number one shirt for Manchester United will be £47 million signing Andre Onana. The 27-year-old goalkeeper comes with a strong profile, entering his prime years, international experience, and a track record with clubs aiming for domestic and European trophies.
Onana's early development took place at the Samuel Eto'o Academy in Cameroon before he moved to Barcelona's youth set-up as a teenager.
His successful six seasons at Ajax resulted in five major titles, including three Eredivisie titles, and a memorable run to the Champions League final with Inter Milan, where he put on superb performances against top opponents.
Despite his impressive record, there are some concerns in his biography, such as a 12-month ban by UEFA in 2021 for a banned substance found in his urine, reduced to nine months after an appeal. He also had some issues with the Cameroon national team and encountered on-field and training-ground conflicts with Inter teammates in 2023.
Despite these concerns, Manchester United's significant investment in Onana reflects their confidence in his character and abilities. Manager Erik ten Hag, who previously coached Onana at Ajax, believes in his qualities and wants to implement a proactive and progressive style of play from the back, which led to De Gea's departure and Onana's high-profile arrival. When United hosts Wolves on August 14, all eyes will be on the new goalkeeper as he starts his journey as the team's first-choice shot-stopper.
