Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea's contract expires without resolution
Posted : 30 June 2023
Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea's contract is set to expire on Friday, and there is still no resolution regarding his future at the club. A previously agreed contract extension framework was altered, prompting both parties to step back and assess the situation.
De Gea, who has been with Manchester United for 12 years and has played 545 games, remains in contact with the club. However, his response to the speculation surrounding his future was a tweet featuring a yawning emoji.
Last season, De Gea won the Premier League Golden Glove for the second time, keeping 17 clean sheets. Both the player and manager Erik ten Hag expressed confidence in De Gea staying at the club.
While he still has the option to sign a contract, as of Saturday, he will be free to join any other club, having been eligible to negotiate pre-contract terms with foreign clubs since January.
Manchester United has been seeking a significant reduction in De Gea's wages from his current record deal of £375,000 per week, signed in 2019. Even with a reduced salary, De Gea would still command a high wage compared to other goalkeepers, making it challenging for him to find similar terms elsewhere.
If he decides to leave after 12 seasons, during which he has won five major honors and four club Player of the Year awards, it would present a problem for Ten Hag.
There have been preliminary discussions with Inter Milan's talented Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana, but budget constraints and other transfer priorities, such as the pursuit of a center-forward and the agreement to sign Mason Mount from Chelsea for £55 million, may require United to sell players before making a move for the 27-year-old Onana.
United has activated a one-year option for veteran keeper Tom Heaton, who is attracting interest from Luton, while Dean Henderson has returned to the club to recover from a thigh injury sustained during his loan spell at Nottingham Forest.
