Manchester United Extends Erik ten Hag's Contract Until 2026 Amid Backroom Staff Revamp Plans

Posted : 04 July 2024

Manchester United has officially extended Erik ten Hag's contract until 2026, retaining him as first team manager by triggering a one-year option. Discussions are ongoing regarding restructuring his backroom staff, potentially bringing in Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake to bolster the team at Old Trafford.

"I am very pleased to have reached an agreement with the club to continue working together," ten Hag stated. Reflecting on his tenure, which includes two trophies and notable progress since joining in 2022, he emphasized the need for sustained effort to meet Manchester United's high expectations in both domestic and European competitions.

Rather than negotiating a new contract, United opted to extend ten Hag's existing agreement, which includes a transfer veto—a provision integral to his initial move from Ajax.

Despite a challenging season that saw United finish eighth in the Premier League, ten Hag's tenure was buoyed by an FA Cup triumph over Manchester City. New sporting director Dan Ashworth affirmed ten Hag's continuity, citing his proven success in European football and aligning with the club's vision for elevating performance standards.

"With our strengthened football leadership team now in place," Ashworth emphasized, "we are looking forward to collaborating closely with Erik to achieve our shared ambitions for Manchester United."
