Manchester United Co-owner Criticizes UEFA Rules on Club Ownership Restrictions

Posted : 20 June 2024

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of Manchester United, has voiced frustration over UEFA's regulations on multi-club ownership, which he claims have hindered the club's ability to sign a player from his other club, Nice, in Ligue 1. Ratcliffe's company INEOS acquired Nice in 2019 before obtaining a minority stake in Manchester United earlier this year. Despite UEFA rules permitting transfers between clubs under the same ownership, complications arise when both clubs qualify for UEFA competitions like the Europa League.

The UEFA regulations stipulate that no individual or entity can exert decisive influence over more than one club participating in UEFA competitions. This restriction has reportedly affected Manchester United's pursuit of Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo, prompting Ratcliffe to criticize the perceived unfairness of these restrictions in an interview with Bloomberg.

Amid these regulatory challenges, Ratcliffe affirmed his support for Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, signaling continuity after a turbulent season marked by a disappointing Premier League finish but a successful FA Cup campaign. Ratcliffe emphasized the importance of fostering a supportive and competitive environment at the club to restore its stature in English and European football.

Furthermore, Ratcliffe expressed skepticism towards proposed football regulatory reforms by the Labour Party, aiming to impose stricter financial controls on clubs. He also criticized the Premier League's upcoming trial of "Top to Bottom Anchoring," a spending limit system, arguing that such measures could hinder top clubs' ability to compete globally against powerhouse teams like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and PSG.
