Manchester United beat Wolves 1-0, thanks to Raphael Varane's headed goal

Posted : 15 August 2023
Manchester United commenced their 2023/24 Premier League journey with a slender 1-0 victory against Wolves at Old Trafford, despite facing a late onslaught from the determined visitors. Despite entering the match as strong favorites, United grappled with dismantling the Wolves' defense and found themselves under pressure for extended periods. It was not until a headed goal from Raphael Varane that they secured the three points.

Wolves, under the management of Gary O’Neil for their inaugural game, showcased an impressive performance that ultimately yielded no results as Raphael Varane's header snatched the victory for United. Wolves exhibited intensity and aggression from the start, leaving United struggling and appearing without a clear strategy.

Although Wolves managed to create solid chances, such as Marcus Rashford's close-range shot against Jose Sa and Raphael Varane's wide header from a corner during added time, the second half unfolded as a more thrilling and rapid affair. Wolves even hit the post through Matheus Cunha, asserting their dominance. Yet, in a brief lapse of concentration, United capitalized, taking the lead. While their appeal for a potential penalty in injury time was denied after Andre Onana's challenge on Sasa Kaladzic, they struggled to translate their efforts into a finishing touch deserving of their overall performance.

Erik ten Hag can draw comfort from his team's ability to secure a winning goal and commend their resilience, but he cannot ignore the shortcomings that surfaced. Despite being the opening match of the season, the team had the entire pre-season to establish greater organization, which the match failed to demonstrate. The front three's pressing lacked intensity, the midfield often appeared vacant, and the combination plays were off. In contrast, Wolves exhibited a more forceful, direct, and assured approach in both running and passing.

In light of this, well-sourced reports indicating Manchester United's interest in Amadou Onana and Sofyan Amrabat seem logical. Both players possess qualities that the squad—now a highly valued assembly—currently lacks. However, the underlying question pertains to whether either player is up to the required standard.
