Manchester United have reached an agreement with Paris St-Germain to sign Uruguayan midfielder Manuel Ugarte for a fee of 50 million euros (£42.29m), with an additional 10 million euros (£8.46m) in potential payments. Ugarte, who has been linked with United throughout the summer, could travel to Manchester for a medical as early as Tuesday. This move comes as United's midfielder Scott McTominay is also on the verge of completing a 30 million euro (£25.37m) transfer to Napoli.
Ugarte joined PSG just last year from Sporting Lisbon for a reported 60 million euros and made 37 appearances for the French club, including 25 in Ligue 1, helping them secure their 12th league title. As part of the deal, PSG has secured a 10% sell-on clause for Ugarte, with both clubs reportedly satisfied with the terms. The transfer of Ugarte to United is contingent upon McTominay’s switch to Napoli, but there is confidence within the Old Trafford camp that the deal will be finalized.
Scott McTominay, who is set to travel to Italy for a medical, has been with Manchester United since attending a United soccer school at the age of five. Despite being offered to other clubs 12 months ago, McTominay remained with United last season, making 32 Premier League appearances and scoring seven goals. However, under manager Erik ten Hag, he was not guaranteed a regular starting position, prompting the decision to sell him as part of United's strategy under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability regulations.
If the deal for Ugarte is completed as expected, he will become Manchester United’s fifth signing of the summer, pushing their total spending for the transfer window to over £190 million. Since Erik ten Hag took charge in 2022, United have invested nearly £600 million in new players, with Ugarte seen as a key addition to strengthen their midfield following his impressive performances for Uruguay, including being named in the Copa America team of the tournament.
