Chairman Khaldoon al-Mubarak of Manchester City has expressed frustration over the Financial Fair Play charges that have cast a shadow over the club's historic Treble. City is currently facing 115 charges from the Premier League for breaching financial regulations. Despite achieving the remarkable feat of winning the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup in a single season, al-Mubarak hopes people will focus on the team's on-pitch achievements rather than the ongoing investigations.
City has been referred to an independent commission regarding over 100 alleged rule breaches spanning from 2009 to 2018. Manager Pep Guardiola has urged for a swift resolution to the matter. Khaldoon stated that the situation is frustrating because it detracts from the excellent work being done at the club, emphasizing that City is well-run overall.
Regarding the charges, Khaldoon refrained from commenting in detail due to legal reasons. He expressed strong views but decided to remain restrained for the time being.
The Premier League has accused City of violating rules related to the provision of accurate financial information, including revenue and operating costs. The club has stated its surprise at the charges and asserts the existence of compelling evidence in its defense.
Khaldoon attributed City's success to their ability to attract world-class investors, creating a commercial powerhouse and establishing themselves as the number one football brand globally. He called for a pause to allow people to gather the facts before making judgments on the matter.
