Manchester City Stunned by Tottenham's 4-0 Victory, Arsenal, Chelsea Bounce Back

Posted : 24 November 2024

Manchester City endured their fifth consecutive defeat on Saturday, suffering a heavy 4-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur, which severely dented their Premier League title aspirations. The result marked the end of City's remarkable 52-match unbeaten home run and left manager Pep Guardiola searching for answers just two days after extending his contract.

Prior to the match, City had paid a heartfelt tribute to injured star Rodri, who had showcased the Ballon d'Or trophy he won last month. However, the positive atmosphere quickly faded as Spurs took full advantage of the absence of the Spanish midfielder, who will miss the remainder of the season due to a knee injury.

Tottenham took control early in the match, with James Maddison scoring twice within the first 20 minutes. The away side extended their lead in the second half, with Pedro Porro adding a third. Spurs sealed their dominant victory in stoppage time when Timo Werner provided a perfect assist for Brennan Johnson to score.

The defeat leaves City five points behind league leaders Liverpool, who will have the opportunity to extend their lead with a game in hand against Southampton on Sunday. With a crucial trip to Anfield next weekend, another defeat would leave City's title hopes in serious jeopardy.

Meanwhile, Arsenal revived their form with a commanding 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest, leveling their points with third-placed Chelsea. Mikel Arteta's side had been struggling with a four-match winless streak, but they bounced back emphatically.

The return of Martin Ødegaard from injury was a key factor, as he played a crucial role in setting up the opening goal for Bukayo Saka in the 15th minute. Saka then turned provider for Thomas Partey, who scored early in the second half. Teenager Ethan Nwaneri capped the performance with his first Premier League goal, further boosting Arsenal's hopes of securing their first league title in over 20 years.

Chelsea also maintained their position in the top three with a 2-1 win over Leicester, despite struggling to convert their dominance into goals. Nicolas Jackson opened the scoring, and Enzo Fernandez added a second after Leicester briefly threatened with a late penalty conversion by Jordan Ayew. Aston Villa, who have now gone six games without a win in all competitions, were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Crystal Palace. Despite twice coming from behind and a missed penalty by Youri Tielemans, Villa salvaged a point thanks to Ross Barkley's header off a Tielemans assist.

Brighton continued their impressive start to the season with a 2-1 win at Bournemouth, which propelled them to fifth in the league. Joao Pedro and Kaoru Mitoma were the scorers for the Seagulls, who had to withstand a late red card for Carlos Baleba. Wolves also secured a vital 4-1 win at Fulham, with Matheus Cunha scoring twice to help lift them out of the bottom three. Everton, on the other hand, failed to capitalize on an early red card for Brentford’s Christian Nørgaard, settling for a goalless draw at Goodison Park.

In other news, Ruben Amorim made his managerial debut for Manchester United on Sunday, with the Red Devils set to face Ipswich in a highly anticipated match.
