Manchester City Signs WSL Top Scorer Vivianne Miedema on Three-Year Deal

Posted : 05 July 2024

Manchester City has officially signed Vivianne Miedema, the top scorer in Women's Super League (WSL) history, on a three-year contract. Miedema's move comes after her contract with Arsenal ended, and she chose City despite interest from numerous European clubs and teams in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL).

During her seven-year tenure at Arsenal, Miedema scored 125 goals and provided 50 assists in 172 appearances, solidifying her place as one of the most prolific forwards in the league. Her achievements include winning four trophies, notably the 2018-19 WSL title, and setting records for the most goals in a single WSL game, the most goals in a single season, and the most goals in WSL history.

Miedema expressed her enthusiasm about joining Manchester City, citing the club's ambitions that align with her own. She remarked, "The reason I chose City is because they have the same ambitions as me. They want to win the league and titles. I've always said I want to play with the best players in the world, and I think City have got that."

Despite suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in December 2022, which kept her sidelined for much of the past two seasons, Miedema is optimistic about her potential contributions to her new team.

Manchester City manager Gareth Taylor is excited about Miedema's addition to the squad, aiming to enhance the team's offensive strength as they pursue their first WSL title since 2016. Taylor said, "We're really looking forward to welcoming Viv to City and seeing her flourish over the next three years.

Our ambition is to compete on the highest stage and for the highest honours, and Viv is aligned with this desire. She's a top talent that I'm excited to work with." Miedema will join fellow Dutch internationals Jill Roord and Kerstin Casparij at City, further boosting the team's international experience and scoring capabilities.
