Manchester City Signs Brazilian Winger Savinho from Troyes for €40 Million

Posted : 18 July 2024

On Thursday, Manchester City announced the acquisition of Brazilian winger Savinho from French club Troyes, which, like City, is owned by the City Football Group (CFG). Savinho, who impressed during his loan spell at Girona last season, has signed a five-year contract with the English champions for a reported fee of €40 million.

Although Savinho was registered with Troyes, he did not appear in any matches for the Ligue 2 side. Following his transfer from Atletico Mineiro in 2022, he was immediately loaned to PSV Eindhoven before spending the past year on loan at Girona. There, he made a significant impact by scoring nine goals and providing 10 assists, helping Girona secure a historic third-place finish in LaLiga and a spot in the Champions League.

In a statement from Manchester City, Savinho expressed his excitement about joining the club, saying, "Everyone knows they are the best team in the world right now, so to be here is very exciting for me." He also looked forward to working with Pep Guardiola, praising him as "one of the greatest coaches ever," and expressed eagerness to experience the Premier League and play alongside top players.

The nature of this transfer, involving CFG’s multi-club ownership structure, continues to spark discussions about the fairness and implications of such arrangements. CFG’s influence extends across 12 clubs on five continents, and earlier this month, UEFA approved City and Girona, as well as Manchester United and Nice—both associated with British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos company—to compete in the Champions League and Europa League, respectively.
