Manchester City's Manuel Akanji to Undergo Surgery, Out for Up to 10 Weeks

Posted : 14 February 2025

Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji will undergo surgery on a thigh injury and is expected to be sidelined for eight to ten weeks. The 29-year-old sustained the injury during City’s 3-2 defeat to Real Madrid in their Champions League knockout phase play-off at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday. Manager Pep Guardiola confirmed the surgery will take place on Saturday, leaving Akanji unavailable for a significant period.

In addition to Akanji's injury, Jack Grealish also picked up a groin injury during the same match, though it is not considered as severe. While Guardiola does not expect Grealish to be ready for Saturday's Premier League fixture against Newcastle United, he stated the team would assess the England international further before making a decision. However, he emphasized that Grealish's situation is less critical compared to Akanji's.

Akanji has been a regular starter for City this season, appearing in 20 of their 24 Premier League matches and 30 games across all competitions. His absence will be a blow to a team already struggling with defensive injuries. City also lost defensive midfielder Rodri in September due to a ruptured ACL and are currently sitting in fifth place, 16 points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Guardiola praised Akanji's efforts, highlighting the defender's crucial role this season despite facing challenging circumstances. Alongside Nathan Ake, Akanji had filled in at right-back and stepped up in emergencies to help the team. Guardiola wished Akanji a speedy recovery, acknowledging the immense contribution he had made to the squad.
