Manchester City secured their place in the Champions League knockout stages with a convincing 3-0 victory over Young Boys. Erling Haaland, who had injury concerns, showed no signs of lingering issues and scored a brace. With this win, City maintained their perfect record in Group G, winning all four matches and ensuring their progression to the last 16 with two games to spare.
Haaland opened the scoring for City with a first-half penalty and later added a brilliant long-range goal, taking his Champions League goal tally to an impressive 39 in 34 matches. Phil Foden also contributed with an eye-catching strike to double City's lead. The match was somewhat one-sided, and Young Boys' Sandro Lauper was sent off in the second half.
This victory extended Manchester City's impressive home record to 23 consecutive wins in 2023, inching closer to Sunderland's English record of 24 successive home wins set in 1891 and 1892. In addition to their Champions League success, City remains unbeaten in their last 17 Champions League games.
Despite Manuel Akanji's injury in the warm-up, which led to Kyle Walker filling in, City quickly reasserted their dominance. Rico Lewis had an early chance for Young Boys, but his shot was cleared off the line by Loris Benito. Haaland's penalty, inspired by Didier Drogba's iconic celebration, gave City the lead. Foden's brilliant solo effort just before halftime further extended their advantage. Haaland's thunderous strike in the second half sealed the victory.
With their place in the knockout stages secured, Pep Guardiola has the option to rest players in the remaining group matches, focusing on their upcoming Premier League fixtures against Tottenham and Crystal Palace. Haaland's performance, including his 15th goal of the season, showcased his continued importance to the team, as City's impressive form continues both domestically and in Europe.
