Manchester City overcome early setback to secure 3-1 victory against Red Star Belgrade in Champions League opener

Posted : 20 September 2023
Manchester City, the defending champions, overcame an early deficit to defeat Red Star Belgrade 3-1 in their Group G opener of the Champions League. Despite dominating the first half, City fell behind to a goal from Osman Bukari just before halftime.

However, Julián Álvarez equalized for City shortly after the restart, and a misjudgment by the Red Star goalkeeper allowed Álvarez to put City in the lead. Rodri added a third goal for City, securing their 19th consecutive home win in all competitions.

The match marked Manchester City's return to Champions League action just over three months after they secured the trophy with a win over Inter Milan. While they struggled to convert numerous chances in the first half, Álvarez's equalizer in the 47th minute turned the tide in City's favor.

Pep Guardiola, the City manager, acknowledged the missed opportunities in the last two games but praised the team's consistency and eventual victory. Erling Haaland, City's star striker, endured a frustrating first half, missing several scoring opportunities. However, Álvarez's performance and determination, especially in his second goal, made a significant impact on the match.

Red Star's Osman Bukari briefly gave them the lead, capitalizing on a defensive lapse by City, but the goal was initially ruled offside before being allowed after a VAR review.

Despite a challenging first half, Guardiola encouraged his team to remain calm and go for the win. City's relentless attack and Álvarez's contributions ultimately secured the victory.

The match showcased Manchester City's determination to defend their Champions League title, with Álvarez playing a pivotal role in the comeback victory.
