Manchester City initiates contract extension talks with Erling Haaland
Posted : 06 October 2023
Manchester City is reportedly preparing to enter into contract extension talks with Erling Haaland, a source has disclosed. Despite having 3½ years remaining on his current contract, which he signed when he joined the Etihad Stadium from Borussia Dortmund in 2022, the club is eager to recognize his outstanding first season, during which the Norwegian striker netted an impressive 52 goals in 53 matches.
Formal negotiations have not yet commenced, but they are anticipated to begin in the coming months. While City is aware of Haaland's aspirations to play for Real Madrid at some point in his career, they believe the 23-year-old is content and settled in Manchester and would be open to extending his stay. His existing contract is set to expire in June 2027, making Haaland 26 years old at the time.
Additionally, City has secured 23-year-old Julián Álvarez's services until 2028. The club expresses satisfaction with Haaland and Álvarez as the two recognized strikers in Pep Guardiola's squad and has firmly dismissed speculations linking them to an 18-year-old Brighton striker, Evan Ferguson, next summer.
In the current season, Haaland has already scored eight goals in 11 games, following his triumphs in the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup during his inaugural campaign at the Etihad. He not only set a Premier League record for the most goals in a single season but also earned the title of Premier League's Player of the Year. Moreover, he is the second favorite to win the Ballon d'Or, with Argentina's captain Lionel Messi leading the race.
