Manchester City close £30 million deal for Mateo Kovacic
Posted : 21 June 2023
Manchester City is on the verge of signing Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea in a deal worth up to £30 million. The 29-year-old Croatian midfielder is expected to join the reigning Premier League champions for an initial fee of £25 million, with the potential for an additional £5 million in add-ons.
Chelsea continues to offload players as they aim to streamline their squad under new manager Mauricio Pochettino. N'Golo Kante, another midfielder, has already agreed to join Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia.
Kovacic initially joined Chelsea on loan from Real Madrid in 2019 before securing a permanent five-year contract. His arrival at Manchester City raises doubts about the future of Ilkay Gundogan, whose contract is nearing expiration.
During the previous season, Kovacic made 37 appearances for Chelsea across all competitions. The team endured a turbulent campaign, going through three managers and finishing 12th in the Premier League. However, Kovacic played a part in Chelsea's success in winning the Champions League in 2021, featuring as a late substitute in the final's 1-0 victory over Manchester City.
On the international stage, Kovacic has earned 95 caps for Croatia and played a pivotal role as they achieved a third-place finish at the 2022 World Cup.
