Manchester City, Barcelona discuss loan agreement for Cancelo, aiming for permanent transfer next summer

Manchester City and Barcelona are engaged in discussions about a potential loan agreement for João Cancelo, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The Spanish giants are seeking to finalize an arrangement for Cancelo to join them on loan for the upcoming season, with an obligation to make the transfer permanent next summer. Negotiations are expected to intensify in the coming week, as both parties aim to find common ground.
Although Manchester City is open to allowing Cancelo to depart, they are not eager to accept a reduced transfer fee. They are looking to include an obligation clause in the deal that would require Barcelona to pay approximately €60 million ($66 million) to make the transfer permanent.
Recent developments have led to Cancelo's exclusion from the squad participating in the Super Cup clash against Sevilla and the 3-0 victory over Burnley in Manchester City's Premier League season opener. This suggests that the 29-year-old player's future at the Etihad Stadium is uncertain.
João Cancelo had a loan spell with Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich during the latter part of the previous season. His presence during the club's preseason tour in Asia does not indicate a likely future with Manchester City.
Barcelona is actively pursuing Cancelo to address a void in the right-back position. The loan of Julián Araujo and the potential departure of Sergiño Dest have created a need for reinforcement in that position.
Despite interest from the Saudi Pro League, sources have informed ESPN that Cancelo's preference is to make a move to Barcelona. The Portuguese player is currently under contract with Manchester City until 2027.
Additionally, Manchester City has recently announced the signing of a new long-term contract with their defender Rico Lewis. The 18-year-old player, who emerged within Pep Guardiola's squad last season, has agreed to a five-year deal that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2028. Expressing his excitement, Lewis highlighted his appreciation for the club and his commitment to continuous improvement.
